Danny Brown has built one of the most distinctive voices in hip hop, literally and figuratively. His signature high pitched delivery and restless willingness to push rap into uncomfortable territory set him apart long before most people caught on. The mixtape XXX put him on the map in a serious way, earning him Artist of the Year nods from Spin and the Detroit Metro Times, and his 2013 album Old cracked the Billboard 200 at number 18. He then signed to Warp Records and kept swinging for the fences with Atrocity Exhibition, a genuinely unsettling record that leaned hard into noise and punk textures. More recently he teamed up with JPEGMafia for Scaring the Hoes, a chaotic and gleefully abrasive collaboration that felt like two people trying to outweird each other in the best possible way. His solo album Quaranta, also from 2023, showed a more reflective side. Then in 2025 he dropped Stardust, a hyperpop influenced record made after getting sober, proving he is still one of the few rappers genuinely unafraid to reinvent himself.
