Daron Malakian is best known as the guitarist, composer, and second vocalist of System of a Down, but Scars on Broadway is very much his own thing. The project started taking shape after System of a Down went on hiatus in 2006, with Malakian pulling together a full band that included System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan, keyboardist Danny Shamoun, bassist Dominic Cifarelli, and guitarist Franky Perez. Their self titled debut dropped in July 2008 to generally favorable reviews, debuting at number 17 on the Billboard charts, and the lead single "They Say" even made it onto Guitar Hero 5 and Rock Band. After a long stretch of on and off activity, lineup shuffles, and a hiatus that dragged from late 2008 all the way to 2018, the band finally delivered the long promised second album Dictator. The wait was worth it for fans who had followed the project through years of false starts. Operating now under the name Daron Malakian and Scars on Broadway, the project leans into alternative metal with Malakian's signature riff heavy, melodic approach firmly at the center.
