Seven consecutive studio albums debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 is a record that still belongs to Dave Matthews Band, and that alone tells you something about the kind of following this Charlottesville outfit built over three decades. Rooted in rock but tangled up with jazz, folk and a loose jam sensibility, their sound was never easy to pin down, which is probably why it stuck. Their 1994 major label debut Under the Table and Dreaming went six times platinum, and the Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group followed in 1996 for "So Much to Say." What really defines DMB, though, is the live experience. They rarely play a song the same way twice, treating each show as its own thing, and fans have followed them obsessively because of it. By 2018 the band had sold more than 25 million concert tickets and a combined 38 million CDs and DVDs. Their most recent studio album Walk Around the Moon came out in 2023, and in 2024 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
