About
Also known as: David Sandstroem, David Sandstrom
Best known as the drummer for Umeå hardcore legends Refused, David Sandström has always had more going on than just keeping time. When Refused split in 1998, he wasted no time: he put out solo work under his own name, starting with a Swedish language record about his grandfather, and kept releasing albums through the 2000s under the banner David Sandström Overdrive. By 2008 he had also co founded the hardcore band AC4 alongside Refused frontman Dennis Lyxzén, this time picking up the bass guitar instead of drumsticks. His solo catalogue spans several albums, from the raw early releases on Demonbox Recordings to Pigs Lose on Razzia Records, and the titles alone give you a sense of his sensibility: sprawling, sardonic, and not particularly interested in playing it safe. Whether behind a kit, a bass, or a microphone, Sandström has spent his career finding new ways to stay firmly in punk's orbit.
