About
Few death metal bands from Greece have made as deep an impression on the underground as Dead Congregation. Formed in Athens in 2004, the band built their reputation on suffocating atmosphere rather than flashy speed or technical showboating. Comparisons to Incantation, Immolation, and Morbid Angel come up constantly, and fairly so, though Dead Congregation carve out their own space in that old school tradition. Their debut full length, Graves of the Archangels, landed in 2008 to serious critical praise, with Pitchfork naming their split with Hatespawn one of the best metal releases of that year. Their second album, Promulgation of the Fall, cemented their standing as one of death metal's more essential acts, drawing particular attention for its drumming and the way the songs shift and mutate with unsettling precision. The EP Sombre Doom followed in 2016, and the band has kept active on the live circuit since.
