Defiance, Ohio brought an unusual sonic palette to folk punk, weaving together violin, cello, double bass, and guitar into something that felt scrappy and earnest at the same time. The Columbus band built a devoted following through relentless touring across the US, Iceland, and Australia, releasing their records mostly through small independent labels, with No Idea Records putting out their most celebrated work. Anti capitalist politics ran through everything they did, and they were open about the tensions and trade offs involved in choosing which labels to work with. Across four full length albums, from Share What Ya Got in 2003 through to Midwestern Minutes in 2010, they refined a sound that felt communal and handmade, with multiple members swapping between instruments and sharing vocal duties. Their last EP, The Calling, came out in 2012, and they toured through 2015 before activity wound down as members spread out to different cities and pursued other projects, including Nana Grizol and several others.
