Formed in 1979 by vocalist Dave Hill and guitarist Mal Spooner in Leek, Staffordshire, Demon quickly became a recognized name in the new wave of British heavy metal. Their 1981 debut Night of the Demon set the tone, but the band never stayed still for long. By 1983 they were leaning into progressive territory with The Plague, swapping black magic imagery for political lyrics and bringing in keyboard textures that would define their sound going forward. The Pink Floyd influenced British Standard Approved followed in 1985, the same year Spooner passed away, yet the band pushed on. Breakout in 1987 is widely seen as their high point, and the reunion era from 2001 onward has kept the momentum going with a string of well received records. Their 2024 album Invincible landed to favorable reviews, showing a band with no interest in coasting on nostalgia. Over the years they have played festivals across Europe including Sweden Rock and Bang Your Head, and in 2018 they toured the UK celebrating the 35th anniversary of The Unexpected Guest.
