About
Destroyer's whole approach is summed up by Dan Bejar's own goal: to start from scratch every time. The Vancouver project began in 1995 and has put out fourteen studio albums that can sound wildly different from one another, from the out of tune lo fi home recordings of the 1996 debut to the MIDI heavy theatrics of Your Blues and the loose rock of This Night. The big breakthrough was 2011's Kaputt, a jazz tinged, lounge flavoured sophisti pop record that Bejar built with Miles Davis and Roxy Music in mind. He sang in a new, almost spoken way, and it brought a first national TV spot on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, a Polaris Music Prize shortlist and a number two spot on Pitchfork's best albums of 2011. Bejar has also recorded a whole EP of Spanish covers, Five Spanish Songs. His most recent album, Dan's Boogie, arrived in March 2025.
