About
Dan Bejar has been running Destroyer since 1995, and one of the most striking things about the project is how deliberately he refuses to stay in one place. His stated goal is to "start from scratch every time", and the records bear that out: from lo fi home recordings to MIDI heavy theatrics to the jazz infused, lounge soaked haze of Kaputt, each album tends to catch listeners off guard. Kaputt, released in 2011, became a real breakthrough, landing on Pitchfork's best of list and shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize, with Bejar describing his vocal approach as "almost unconscious, more like speaking into a vacuum." Bejar writes with a density that can feel overwhelming but rewards close listening, and his longtime collaborators, including producer John Collins, keyboardist Ted Bois, and trumpeter JP Carter, give the band a surprisingly warm, cohesive sound despite all the stylistic detours. Destroyer's fourteenth studio album, Dan's Boogie, arrived in March 2025, keeping the streak of unpredictable reinvention firmly intact.
