About
Hermine Deurloo plays chromatic harmonica with a dedication that has taken her from Amsterdam jazz clubs to concert halls worldwide. She picked up the instrument herself in the early 1990s, and by 1994 it had become her main voice, eventually overshadowing the alto saxophone she had studied at the Sweelinck Conservatory. Her debut, Sozinhos, came out in 1997 alongside Ricardo Insunza, followed quickly by her first solo record I Say Jazz, featuring drummer John Engels. For roughly seven years from 1998 she was a core member of the Willem Breuker Kollektief, touring across America, Europe and Asia and adding her sound to multiple albums. She has since shared stages and sessions with Toots Thielemans, Al Jarreau, Candy Dulfer and the Concertgebouw Orchestra, and in 2018 she took home the Bernie Bray Harmonica Player of the Year Award, a prize previously won by Thielemans and Stevie Wonder.
