Few artists have dominated pop music across as many eras as Diana Ross. As the lead voice of the Supremes, she helped turn Motown into a cultural force, racking up 12 number one pop singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and making the group the best charting female act in chart history. When she stepped out on her own in 1970, the momentum barely slowed. Six of her solo singles topped the Billboard Hot 100, including "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "Upside Down", and her duet with Lionel Richie, "Endless Love". That run made her the female solo act with the most number ones in the US at the time. Ross also crossed into film with real impact. Her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues earned her an Academy Award nomination, the first for an African American actress in a debut film role. The soundtrack hit number one on the Billboard 200. Later came Mahogany and The Wiz, and the title track from Mahogany became yet another chart topper. With over 100 million records sold worldwide and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award she has won twice, her catalogue spans soul, disco, pop and R&B in a way few artists can match.
