DJ Ötzi, the Austrian schlager artist born Gerhard Friedle in St. Johann in Tirol, pulled off something rare: a novelty hit that crossed language barriers completely. His cover of Bruce Channel's "Hey Baby (Uhh, Ahh)" went to number one in Australia, Ireland and the United Kingdom in 2000, introducing him to audiences who had never heard a word of schlager in their lives. Back home in German speaking Europe he was already a phenomenon, with "Anton aus Tirol" spending 75 weeks in the Austrian charts after its 1999 release. His 2007 duet with Nik P., "Ein Stern (...der deinen Namen trägt)", became a genuine chart curiosity, sitting on the German Singles Chart for 106 weeks, which makes it the longest running single in that chart's history. It sold over two million copies despite major Austrian and German radio stations initially refusing to play it. Lately he has been keeping busy performing live and releasing new material, including the track "Tirol" and a collaboration with Lisa Marie Friedle called "Ein Licht".
