About
Druha Rika have been one of Ukraine's more enduring rock acts since forming in Zhytomyr in the mid 1990s, with a lineup that has stayed remarkably stable across nearly three decades. The band, whose name translates simply as Second River, built their reputation through seven studio albums spanning everything from their 2000 debut to the 2017 release Piramida. Along the way they put out a couple of compilations, including a best of in 2009, which speaks to a catalogue that their fanbase genuinely wanted revisited. Frontman Valeriy Kharchyshyn handles lead vocals and trumpet, giving the band a sound that sits a little apart from your standard rock setup. Three of the founding members, Kharchyshyn, guitarist Oleksandr Baranovsky, and drummer Oleksiy Doroshenko, have been there from the very beginning, which gives Druha Rika a cohesion that comes through in their work. Albums like Metanoia and Supernation show a band willing to push their sound in new directions without losing the thread.
