Dumpstaphunk came together almost by accident when keyboardist Ivan Neville threw together a band for a single gig at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in 2003, and what started as a one off has since grown into one of the city's most celebrated funk outfits. Ivan, son of Aaron Neville and a veteran of the Neville Brothers alongside uncle Art Neville of The Meters, brought that deep New Orleans lineage into something distinctly its own: two bass players locking in for colossal low end grooves, wah wah guitar, chattery drums and the kind of raw, syncopated energy that critics have put in the same breath as James Brown and Parliament Funkadelic. Their 2013 album Dirty Word drew in Flea, Trombone Shorty, Ani DiFranco and the Rebirth Brass Band, while the 2021 follow up Where Do We Go From Here balanced dancefloor energy with more reflective material, featuring Marcus King and Chali 2na. The New York Times called them the best funk band in New Orleans back in 2007, and the band has kept earning that reputation at festivals from Bonnaroo to Outside Lands ever since.
