Dutch Uncles have built a reputation on something genuinely rare: making music with odd time signatures feel like pop. The Marple band has always had an ear for rhythmic complexity, drawing from Talking Heads, King Crimson and Steve Reich while keeping things melodic and accessible, anchored by Duncan Wallis's distinctive androgynous vocals. Their 2013 album Out of Touch In The Wild pushed their sound further, with composer Robin Richards reaching toward Stravinsky and tube percussion, and Wallis framing the whole record around the theme of addiction. They've cycled through some genuinely different creative headspaces across six albums. O Shudder went inward and personal, aiming somewhere between Grace Jones and Talking Heads. Big Balloon from 2017 took a more stripped back, politically charged approach under progressive rock influence from acts like Gentle Giant and Focus. Then after more than six years away, they returned in 2023 with True Entertainment, heading back out on tour and playing a headline slot at Manchester International Festival.
