About
Chausson's Poème for violin and orchestra was written for Eugène Ysaÿe, one of the most virtuosic violinists who ever lived, and the piece demands exactly that level of skill from whoever takes it on. Arabella Steinbacher is the soloist stepping up to it here, a violinist known for technical precision, a radiant tone and expressive depth. It is a lush, lyrical and complex work, yet always accessible enough to hold the listener's attention throughout. Paired with it is Dvořák's Eighth Symphony, a work that wears its good mood openly. After the stormy and weighty Seventh, Dvořák deliberately shifted toward something lighter and more joyful for the Eighth, drawing on the folk music of Bohemia and the natural surroundings of his beloved country retreat in the village of Vysoká near Prague. Melodies came to him effortlessly there, and that ease shows in every bar of the symphony.
