About
Eagle Twin operate somewhere between doom metal and sludge metal, but the Salt Lake City duo of Gentry Densley and drummer Tyler Smith pull from a far wider net than those labels suggest. Lengthy instrumental passages, blues drenched riffs, jazz fusion harmonics, and Densley's gruff, half chanted vocals that sometimes tip into overtone singing give the band a genuinely singular sound. Densley himself traces it back to "the riff" as a kind of universal language, a tradition running from Page and Iommi through to Wino, filtered through his own deep interest in myth and collective memory. Their 2009 debut The Unkindness of Crows, released on Southern Lord, drew heavily on Ted Hughes's poetry collection Crow, weaving together crow mythology, native myths, Mormon hymns, and Japanese haiku into a loose concept album. The follow up, The Feather Tipped the Serpent's Scale, pushed the narrative further, tracing a transformation from birds burning in battle with the sun, into snakes, and eventually back to avian form. A third album, The Thundering Heard, followed in 2018, with a split release alongside The Otolith arriving in 2024.
