About

Also known as: E. Grant, Eddie Grant, Eddy Grand, Edmond Montague Grant, Edmund Grant, Grant, Eddy

Eddy Grant has always worked across genres rather than inside them. A founding member of the Equals, one of the UK's first racially mixed bands, he wrote their number one hit "Baby, Come Back" and played lead guitar before launching a solo career that landed some of the most recognisable songs of the early 1980s. "Electric Avenue" hit number two on both sides of the Atlantic and earned a Grammy nomination, while "I Don't Wanna Dance" spent three weeks at the top of the UK charts. His 1988 anti apartheid anthem "Gimme Hope Jo'anna" was banned by the South African government, which probably tells you everything about how effective it was. Grant built his own Blue Wave Studios in Barbados after moving there in 1982, and the facility attracted everyone from the Rolling Stones to Sting. A multi instrumentalist and producer as well as a songwriter, he even created his own genre, ringbang, in the 1990s. His catalogue stretches from reggae to rock to soca, and tracks like "Electric Avenue" and "I Don't Wanna Dance" continue to rack up streams decades on.
