Few bands defined Slovak pop rock quite like Elán. Formed in Bratislava in 1968, they became one of the most popular acts in all of Czechoslovakia through the 1980s, releasing ten albums between 1981 and 1991 and racking up four consecutive Zlatý slavík awards. Their sound built on original Slovak language songs, and that commitment to writing in Slovak gave them a distinct identity that connected with audiences across the region. The 1989 album Rabaka even spawned an accompanying film. After lineup shifts and a stint on hiatus in the mid 2000s, Elán kept finding new gears. They returned in 2010, signed with Warner Music in 2014, and put out their fifteenth album Najvyšší čas in 2019. They also carry some bittersweet history: in 1993 they represented Slovakia at the Eurovision preliminary round but finished fourth, just missing the finals in Ireland. Longtime member Vašo Patejdl, whose keyboard work and vocals shaped much of the band's sound, passed away in August 2023.
