Electric Wizard built their name on some of the heaviest, most suffocating sounds in doom metal, and two of their records, Come My Fanatics from 1997 and Dopethrone from 2000, are still talked about as genre landmarks. The Dorset band blend doom with stoner and sludge elements, wrapping it all in lyrics about the occult, witchcraft, H. P. Lovecraft, horror films and cannabis. Allmusic called Dopethrone a "dirge masterpiece", and it remains the record most fans point to as their peak. The band started out in 1993 when Jus Oborn put the lineup together after a string of earlier projects under names like Lord of Putrefaction and Eternal. The name Electric Wizard was stitched together from two Black Sabbath song titles, which tells you everything about their frame of reference. The lineup has shifted quite a bit over the years, with guitarist Liz Buckingham becoming a key creative partner alongside Oborn. Nine studio albums deep, the band have kept that thick, bong hazed, psychedelic heaviness at the core of everything they do.
