About
Formed in Eindhoven in 1986, Elegy built their reputation as pioneers of what people now call progressive power metal, blending the muscle of power metal with the complexity of progressive rock in a way that few Dutch bands had attempted before. Their debut album Labyrinth of Dreams hit number 42 on the Japanese charts, and the band went on to tour with heavyweights like King Diamond, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Stratovarius. Albums like State of Mind and Manifestation of Fear earned solid reviews across Europe and Japan, while Forbidden Fruit in 2000 drew praise from critics as one of their strongest efforts. A revolving door of members kept things turbulent throughout their career, and after Principles of Pain in 2002 the band went quiet for years. A reunion was announced in April 2023, bringing back founding guitarist Henk van der Laars alongside vocalist Ian Parry and a lineup that mirrors their strongest era. Interest from musicians like Bill Hudson and the Headless camp helped reignite momentum, and Parry and bassist Martin Helmantel have been on the road with Headless supporting Geoff Tate, even performing the Elegy classic Visual Vortex live.
