En Vogue built their reputation on four part harmonies so tight they made the competition look sloppy. The Oakland quartet of Terry Ellis, Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron, and Maxine Jones debuted in 1990 with "Hold On", which shot to No. 2 on the Hot 100 and went to No. 1 on the R&B chart. Their 1992 album Funky Divas was where things really exploded: five million copies sold, five Grammy nominations, and a run of singles including "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)", "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", and "Free Your Mind" that cemented their place as the defining female R&B act of the era. They racked up more No. 1 R&B singles than any other female group except the Supremes, and "Don't Let Go (Love)" in 1996 became their biggest pop crossover yet. Over the years the lineup shifted, with Rhona Bennett eventually joining alongside Ellis, Herron, and Jones. Across all the lineup changes they have moved 20 million records worldwide, and Billboard still ranks them among the most successful girl groups ever recorded.
