About

English Dogs came out of Grantham in 1981 as a raw hardcore punk outfit, drawing comparisons to Discharge and Black Flag, but their story gets interesting when they started dragging in heavy metal. By the mid eighties they had gone full crossover, and Forward into Battle drew comparisons to Voivod, Venom, and Tank. Where Legend Began, released in 1987, saw them drop the punk almost entirely in favour of heavy metal. The band went through multiple reformations and lineup shifts over the decades. Gizz Butt, one of the key architects of that metal sound, later filled in as live guitarist for The Prodigy, which brought a fresh wave of attention back to English Dogs. The 2011 reunion of the crossover lineup sold out its tour and led to new material, eventually resulting in The Thing with Two Heads on Candlelight Records in 2014. Few UK punk acts can claim a catalogue that swings so far between two genres and pulls it off convincingly.
