Raphaël Pichon founded Ensemble Pygmalion in France in 2006, and the group has since become a regular presence on stages around the world. Pichon himself sang as a countertenor under conductors including Jordi Savall and Gustav Leonhardt before turning to conducting full time, and that background in performance shines through in the ensemble's work. They move across early music with a sense of adventure and theatrical instinct, finding drama in everything from Buxtehude cantata cycles to Mozart's unfinished Mass in C minor. For Buxtehude's Membra Jesu Nostri, a seven part cantata cycle meditating on the body of Christ, the ensemble has performed in a formation of 28 musicians. Critics have responded warmly, and the Volkskrant described Pichon as a collector of five star reviews.
