Few guitarists have made a single song carry as much weight as Eric Johnson did with "Cliffs of Dover". That instrumental track, pulled from his 1990 platinum album Ah Via Musicom, earned him a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance and showcased the violin like tone he coaxed from his 1954 Fender Stratocaster, a guitar he named Virginia. Based in Austin, Johnson plays across a genuinely wide range, taking in rock, blues, jazz fusion, folk, soul, classical and country without it ever feeling like a greatest hits of genre tourism. His perfectionism is well documented. The follow up to Ah Via Musicom took six years to arrive partly because he scrapped multiple finished versions before settling on Venus Isle. Before his major label breakthrough, he worked as a session guitarist for names like Carole King and Cat Stevens, quietly building the chops that would eventually make Keyboard magazine call him one of the most respected guitarists on the planet.
