About
Escarteen Sisters are two sisters, Laia and Flavia Escartin, who build their sound around viola, cello, and two voices. What they make resists easy categorisation: not quite pop, folk, jazz, or classical, but something that sits in its own space where all of those touch. Poetry tends to be the jumping off point, and the physical act of playing and singing at the same time is central to how they perform. Their multicultural background, rooted in a Catalan, Mexican, and Belgian family, feeds directly into the music. They sing in the four languages spoken at home, with Catalan playing a particularly prominent role, and they have taken minority languages like Catalan and Dutch to audiences across Europe and the Middle East. Their album 'willow tree' circles around contrasts: weight and lightness, closed fists and open hands.
