Excepter has been one of Brooklyn's more genuinely strange propositions since John Fell Ryan, a member of No Neck Blues Band, founded the group in 2002. Built around improvisation both on stage and in the studio, they've put out a sprawling catalogue across labels like Load Records, Paw Tracks (Animal Collective's imprint), and Woodsist, with releases ranging from cassettes to double LPs. The Village Voice once quipped they had "ousted Animal Collective as the Village People of Brooklyn Noise," a nod to their distinctive dress sense as much as their sound. They landed on the cover of The Wire in May 2010, and a Pendu Sound compilation featuring the group made Thurston Moore's top 80 of 2006. Their most recent entry in a long discography is the Time Fog album from 2025.
