About
Exhumed have been one of the most uncompromising acts in extreme metal since forming in San Jose, California in 1990, built almost entirely around the singular vision of vocalist and guitarist Matt Harvey. Their debut album Gore Metal blended death metal and grindcore into something that laid a template for plenty of bands that followed, even if Harvey himself admits the production was a mess. The follow up Slaughtercult is where they really hit their stride, deliberately stripping out double bass and going for a raw, live sounding brutality that set them apart from the death metal pack of the time. After a hiatus that ran from 2005 to 2010, Harvey reformed the band with fresh energy and has kept Exhumed on a remarkably consistent run since. Necrocracy, released through Relapse Records, and the 2017 album Death Revenge show a band that keeps refining its formula without losing any of its edge. They even covered Madonna for fun in 2020, which tells you everything about their sense of humour. Recent activity includes a retrospective series called Decayed Decades, looking back across their career in gore.
