About
Also known as: エクソ, エクソ (EXO), 엑소, 엑소 (EXO)
EXO were built around a pretty bold idea: one group, two sub units, releasing the same songs in Korean and Mandarin at the same time. SM Entertainment launched them in 2012 with twelve members, split into Exo K and Exo M, and the name comes from the word exoplanet. After a few members left in 2014 and 2015, the remaining nine carried on as a single group, still switching between Korean, Mandarin and Japanese. Their 2013 album XOXO, with the breakthrough single Growl, sold over a million copies once repackaged. That made them the first Korean act to hit that mark in twelve years. Later albums kept up the pace, and Don't Mess Up My Tempo debuted at number 23 on the US Billboard 200. Their eighth album, Exist, is their biggest seller at home, with over 2 million copies. Along the way came sub units like Exo CBX and Exo SC, plus solo careers in music, film and TV, and five Album of the Year wins in a row at the MAMA Awards.
