Few one hit wonders have a story as genuinely strange as F.R. David. Born Elli Robert Fitoussi, this French singer and guitarist built his stage name from his initials and a nod to the myth of David and Goliath. Before his big moment arrived, he had already spent years working as a guitarist for Vangelis in the early 1970s and lending his voice to several of Vangelis's early albums, played in the progressive rock outfit David Explosion, and appeared on Les Variations' 1975 album Café de Paris. Then came "Words", a slightly melancholy synth ballad delivered in a slender, high pitched voice that sold eight million copies worldwide and ruled charts across Europe in late 1982. It reached number two in the UK and later turned up in the Oscar nominated film Call Me by Your Name. F.R. David kept busy through the decades that followed, writing for other artists, touring France with 52 concerts between 2010 and 2011, and releasing albums including Numbers in 2009 and Midnight Drive in 2013. His white Fender Stratocaster and sunglasses remain his personal trademarks.
