About
Also known as: Fairpoint Convention
Fairport Convention are the band that taught British folk to plug in. Starting out as a Dylan and Joni Mitchell covers outfit, so American in feel they got called "the British Jefferson Airplane", they flipped the script with Unhalfbricking, where "A Sailor's Life" put a traditional British song on a rock beat for the first time. Liege & Lief followed in 1969 and was later voted the most influential folk album of all time at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. The lineup has been a revolving door, with Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, Iain Matthews and Dave Swarbrick all passing through. Bassist Dave Pegg is the one constant since 1969, and his jig and reel inspired basslines have been copied across folk rock and folk punk. Their only top 40 single was "Si Tu Dois Partir", a French language take on a Dylan song. They also gave the world the Cropredy Festival, which grew out of a 1979 farewell gig and now draws around 20,000 people a year. Their 29th studio album, Shuffle and Go, arrived in 2020.
