About
Also known as: فرهاد دريا
Few Afghan artists have shaped their country's pop landscape the way Farhad Darya has. Since the 1980s, the Kabul born singer, composer and producer has blended folk, classical ghazal, rock and Western pop into something distinctly his own, recording in Dari, Pashto, Uzbek, Hindi and English across a career that has followed Afghanistan's turbulent recent history. His band Goroh e Baran was one of the decade's standout acts, and he claims to have introduced multitrack recording to Afghanistan in 1986. Forced into exile in 1990, he recorded in Paris and Hamburg before eventually settling in Virginia, releasing a string of albums that kept Afghan music alive for diaspora audiences. His return to Kabul produced Salaam Afghanistan, the first major pop hit of the post Taliban era, and on 14 May 2004 he performed to roughly 45,000 people at Ghazi Stadium in a concert Songlines magazine later named one of 50 Great Moments in World Music. Beyond music, Darya has served as UNDP National Goodwill Ambassador for Afghanistan.
