Fat Freddy's Drop are a seven piece band from Wellington, New Zealand, and their sound pulls from just about everywhere: dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno all get folded into their sprawling, improvised live sets. That reputation as a live act was hard won. They started as a loose jam crew in the late 1990s, with members splitting time across Wellington bands like The Black Seeds, TrinityRoots, and Bongmaster, before eventually making Fat Freddy's the main event. Their 2005 debut studio album Based on a True Story was a milestone in New Zealand music history, becoming the first independently distributed record to debut at number one in the country, and it stayed in the top 40 for over two years. The songs on it had been road tested live for years before anyone pressed them to disc. International momentum really kicked off when the 2002 single Midnight Marauders found its way to German label Sonar Kollektiv, leading to European DJ remixes and a touring relationship with Europe that has kept them crossing the Atlantic almost every year since.
