One of the architects of progressive metal, Fates Warning has been grinding away since 1982 and still commands serious respect in the genre. Alongside Queensrÿche and Dream Theater, they form what fans call the "Big Three" of prog metal, and guitarist Jim Matheos is the one constant thread running through all of it. Their early albums leaned hard into NWOBHM territory, but by the time Awaken the Guardian dropped in 1986, they were carving out something genuinely new. That album made history as the first Metal Blade release to crack the Billboard 200. The late 1980s were peak Fates Warning commercially, with No Exit hitting No. 111 on the Billboard 200 and videos landing on MTV's Headbangers Ball. Perfect Symmetry followed with Kevin Moore of Dream Theater guesting on keys, and the cover designed by Rush's go to artist Hugh Syme. They sold over a million albums worldwide by 2001. Their thirteenth studio album, Long Day Good Night, arrived in November 2020, featuring guests including Gavin Harrison on drums and string players Mika Posen and Raphael Weinroth Browne.
