Father John Misty is the stage name of Joshua Michael Tillman, and the persona suits him perfectly: sardonic lyrics, theatrical stage presence, and a discography that keeps refusing to sit still. He spent years recording quiet, folk leaning solo records as J. Tillman before drumming for Fleet Foxes on their celebrated Helplessness Blues album. Leaving the band in 2012 kicked off something entirely different. Signing to Sub Pop and relocating to Los Angeles, he released Fear Fun, a sharp left turn into indie rock with a satirical edge. The records that followed kept pushing further: I Love You, Honeybear was a swooning concept album built around his marriage, Pure Comedy swapped romance for a bleak survey of consumerism and politics, and God's Favorite Customer and Chloë and the Next 20th Century pulled in soft rock and classic pop influences respectively. Beyond his own work, he has contributed as a songwriter and producer to records by Beyoncé, Lana Del Rey, Lady Gaga, and Post Malone.
