About

Few bands rewired the idea of what a rock record could be quite like Faust. The Hamburg outfit built their reputation in the early 1970s by combining dissonance, improvisation, and experimental electronics in ways that pointed directly toward ambient and industrial music long before those genres had names. Their debut came out on clear vinyl in a clear sleeve printed with an X ray of a fist, and that restless, confrontational approach to presentation matched everything going on in the grooves. They became a cornerstone of the krautrock movement, even if the commercial rewards never followed. After Polydor dropped them, Faust signed to Virgin and released The Faust Tapes at the price of a single, shifting over 100,000 copies. The band fell apart in 1975 under genuinely chaotic circumstances involving a Munich recording studio, unpaid bills, and three members being arrested. They resurfaced in the early 1990s and have been touring and recording in various lineups ever since. Radiohead, Sonic Youth, Stereolab, and Throbbing Gristle are among the acts who count them as a direct influence.
