About

Also known as: Feargal Shakley, Feargal Sharky, Feargal Shearkey, Fergal Sharkey, Seán Feargal Sharkey

Feargal Sharkey will always be linked to the Undertones, the Derry punk band whose "Teenage Kicks" became one of the most celebrated singles in British radio history. But his solo work took him somewhere completely different. "A Good Heart", a song written by Lone Justice frontwoman Maria McKee that had flopped in the US, became a number one hit for Sharkey in the UK, Australia, Belgium, Ireland and the Netherlands in 1985. He followed it with "You Little Thief", another top five UK hit, and his self titled debut album cracked the top 15. A third album, Songs From The Mardi Gras, kept him in the charts into 1991. Since stepping back from performing, Sharkey has put serious energy into the UK music industry, heading up UK Music and serving on the Radio Authority, picking up an OBE in 2019 for his efforts. He has also become one of the loudest voices campaigning against water companies dumping sewage into British rivers and coastlines, particularly the chalk streams he fishes as a lifelong fly fisherman.
