Few bands have ever crammed as many genres into one sound as Fishbone. The Los Angeles crew blends ska, funk, punk, metal, reggae, and soul into something that really has no clean category, and their relentless live energy turned them into a cult institution long before the word "alternative" meant anything on a radio playlist. Their 1988 record Truth and Soul sharpened the attack with hard edged social commentary on racism, fascism, and inequality, while a scorching cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead" gave them their first MTV moment. The 1991 album The Reality of My Surroundings was their commercial peak, cracking the Billboard top 50 and landing "Everyday Sunshine" and "Sunless Saturday" on MTV, the latter with a video directed by Spike Lee. Give a Monkey a Brain and He'll Swear He's the Center of the Universe from 1993 pushed even further into free jazz and heavy metal territory. The band has survived dramatic lineup shifts over the decades, and as recently as 2025 they dropped a collaboration with George Clinton, proof that the chaos is still very much alive.
