About
Stuart Turner & The Flat Earth Society grew out of Turner's solo work as an alternative blues musician based in Medway, Kent, where he'd already earned a reputation for spooky, brooding folk blues that had critics reaching for freight train metaphors. He formed the band with guitarist Robbie Wilkinson in 2009, and their debut album Gin & Bitters layered what one writer called 'steam driven power' over Turner's anguished urban blues. Over the years the lineup expanded considerably, eventually pulling in banjo, mandolin, accordion and a pair of vocalists, Rachel Lowrie and Ani Graves, whose presence shaped the direction of later records. Their sixth album, Implicit Narrative, recorded almost entirely live over two frantic 48 hour sessions, was released in March 2020, just days before the UK went into lockdown, which effectively buried it before it had a chance to breathe.
