About
Also known as: Michael Balzary, Michael Peter Balzary
Flea has spent four decades turning the bass into a lead instrument. As a founding member of Red Hot Chili Peppers, he built a style on punchy slap bass, with traces of funk, punk, psychedelia and hard rock mixed in. Rolling Stone readers once ranked him the second best bassist of all time, and in 2012 he went into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the rest of the band. Beyond the Peppers, he has played in Atoms for Peace, Antemasque and Rocket Juice & the Moon, and has played alongside people like Johnny Cash, Tom Waits and Nirvana. He also acts, with credits in Back to the Future Part II and III, The Big Lebowski, Baby Driver and Obi Wan Kenobi. These days the spotlight is on his solo work. His debut album Honora came out on March 27, 2026, and recent releases include a take on Wichita Lineman with Nick Cave and a track with Thom Yorke.
