About
Also known as: FlyLo, フライング・ロータス
Flying Lotus, the Los Angeles producer born Steven Ellison, sits at a genuinely rare crossroads of jazz legacy and forward thinking electronics. His great aunt Alice Coltrane is cited as the biggest influence on his sound, and that spiritual, cosmic thread runs through everything from the afrofuturist sprawl of Cosmogramma to the death obsessed jazz odyssey of You're Dead! He built Brainfeeder into one of the most creatively restless labels around, and his Adult Swim bumper music has been shaping late night television sound for years. The FlyLo universe extends well beyond music. He curated the in game radio station FlyLo FM for Grand Theft Auto V, released rap mixtapes under the alter ego Captain Murphy, and has moved into filmmaking with the sci fi horror film Ash. Collaborators across his seven albums include Thundercat, Thom Yorke, Erykah Badu, and Ravi Coltrane, which feels fitting given his family tree.
