About
Also known as: Christopher Francis Ocean, フランクオーシャン, フランク・オーシャン
Frank Ocean spent years writing hits for other people before anyone knew his name. Under the alias Lonny Breaux, he ghostwrote tracks for Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, John Legend, and Brandy, then pivoted hard toward his own voice after joining the LA hip hop collective Odd Future. His 2011 mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra announced something genuinely different in R&B, and his debut album Channel Orange doubled down on that eclecticism, blending soul, funk, and sharp storytelling in ways that earned a Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album and an Album of the Year nomination. The follow up, Blonde, dropped in 2016 after a four year silence and landed at number one on the Billboard 200. Pitchfork later ranked it the best album of the entire 2010s decade. Since then Ocean has kept a deliberately low profile, releasing the occasional single, working as a photographer, and building out his fashion label Homer alongside Homer Radio. Fifteen of his songs have charted on the Billboard Hot 100, and his influence on alternative R&B is hard to overstate.
