About
Frans Helmerson is one of those cellists whose reputation rests on a genuinely remarkable range. The Swedish musician has performed across Europe, Asia, the United States and Russia, working alongside conductors such as Rostropovich, Seiji Ozawa and Esa Pekka Salonen. His recording of the Dvorak Concerto on BIS Records drew widespread critical praise, and his two Shostakovich cello concertos, recorded with conductor Valery Polyansky and the Russian State Symphony Capella, earned similarly strong notices. In 2002 Helmerson co founded the Michelangelo String Quartet with violinists Mihaela Martin and Daniel Austrich and violist Nobuko Imai, a group that still performs regularly around the world. Teaching has been just as central to his career: he has held posts at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and the Escuela Superior Musica Reina Sofia in Madrid, and he now teaches at the Barenboim Said Akademie in Berlin and the Kronberg Academy in Frankfurt.
