About
Based in Örebro, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra has roots stretching back to 1831, but the ensemble as it exists today came together in 1995 when the Örebro Symphony Orchestra and the Örebro Chamber Orchestra merged into one. Thomas Dausgaard shaped the orchestra's identity over more than two decades as principal conductor, eventually stepping back after the 2018 to 2019 season and taking the title of conductor laureate. Clarinetist and conductor Martin Fröst took over the principal conductor role from the 2019 to 2020 season onward. The orchestra records for a serious roster of labels including BIS Records, Naxos, Chandos, and Hyperion, and performs at the Örebro Concert Hall. Composer Karin Rehnqvist spent four years as composer in residence, and violinist Nikolaj Znaider served as principal guest conductor from 2009 to 2012. It is a genuinely versatile ensemble with a track record that goes well beyond regional significance.
