Amsterdam Sinfonietta is a Dutch string orchestra that has been operating without a conductor since Candida Thompson took over as artistic leader and concertmaster in 2003, giving the ensemble a chamber music feel that was central to its original vision when it was founded in 1988 as Nieuw Sinfonietta Amsterdam. The repertoire runs from Baroque to contemporary, and the orchestra has premiered works by composers including Jörg Widmann, John Zorn, Sofia Gubaidulina and Bryce Dessner. They have recorded with labels including Channel Classics and BIS, picking up an Edison along the way for their Shostakovich recordings. The ensemble has performed for Nelson Mandela in South Africa, played the Barbican in London and the Konzerthaus in Vienna, and toured South America for the first time in 2017. Soloists ranging from Yo Yo Ma and Gidon Kremer to Janine Jansen have joined them on stage. More recently, a 2025 upload paying tribute to Egyptian legend Umm Kulthum shows the Sinfonietta still pushing well beyond the standard classical playlist.
