About
Few acts make a stronger statement before playing a single note than Fulu Miziki. The six piece Kinshasa collective builds every instrument, mask, and costume entirely from garbage, and their name in Lingala says exactly that: music from garbage. It is not just an aesthetic choice. Singer and drummer Sekelembele has put it plainly: in nature there is no waste, because life reuses everything, and the group is committed to giving discarded material a second life. Musically they pitch themselves as a pan African message of artistic liberation fused with ecological urgency, and Pitchfork described their 2022 debut EP Ngbaka as first and foremost a party record, one tinged with an undercurrent of urgency. Released on Moshi Moshi Records, it was followed by the EP Mokano in 2024. Their Afrofuturist live show earned them a slot at WOMAD in England, and their growing catalogue of singles keeps the momentum going.
