About
Also known as: Garet Gates, Gareth Paul Gates
Gareth Gates got his start as the runner up on the very first series of Pop Idol in 2002, losing out to Will Young, but he walked away with a record deal and a run of hits most winners would envy. His debut single, a cover of Unchained Melody, went straight in at number one and was voted Record of the Year by ITV viewers. Anyone of Us (Stupid Mistake) and a duet with Young also topped the charts, and by 2008 he had shifted over 3.5 million records in the UK. He also took Spirit in the Sky to number one with The Kumars for Comic Relief, and won best international male awards from MTV Asia. The pop run slowed after his second album, and Gates later turned to musical theatre. He played the title role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in the West End, spent 18 months as Marius in Les Misérables, and took parts in Loserville and Legally Blonde. He has also spoken openly about his stutter and trained as a speech coach.
