About
Also known as: Garry Glitter, Paul Francis Gadd
Gary Glitter spent the early 1970s turning a joke concept into one of glam rock's defining sounds. His producer Mike Leander originally cooked up the thundering, stomp heavy style almost as a parody of the genre, yet it clicked immediately: "Rock and Roll (Parts 1 and 2)" launched Glitter into the UK charts and kicked off a run of 26 hit singles, 12 of which cracked the top 10. His glitter suits, platform boots and two drummer live setup became instantly recognisable, and songs like "I'm the Leader of the Gang (I Am)", "I Love You Love Me Love" and "Another Rock and Roll Christmas" kept him on the charts well into the 1980s. He shifted over 20 million records in total, with his 1973 album Touch Me peaking at number two in the UK. His career collapsed entirely after his 1999 conviction for downloading child sexual abuse material, and subsequent convictions in Vietnam in 2006 and the UK in 2015 for serious sexual offences against children resulted in a 16 year prison sentence. He is a convicted and disgraced figure, and his performances no longer air on BBC repeats of Top of the Pops.
