About

Also known as: G. Webb, Gary Anthony James Webb, Gary Newman, Gary Numan -, Valeriun

Gary Numan built his name on a sound that barely existed before he got to it: heavy synth hooks pushed through guitar effects pedals, giving his music a distorted, metallic edge that still sounds like nothing else. He first broke through fronting Tubeway Army, whose 1979 album Replicas hit No. 1 in the UK and launched the single "Are 'Friends' Electric?" into the same spot. He followed that almost immediately with his solo debut The Pleasure Principle, another UK No. 1 album that produced "Cars", a record that climbed to No. 9 in the US and topped the charts in Canada. Worth noting: The Pleasure Principle was a rock album with zero guitars. After peaking commercially in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Numan kept going, accumulating a devoted cult following across decades of releases. He has sold over 10 million records and is widely regarded as a pioneer of electronic music. His androgynous android persona and distinctive voice became as iconic as his synthesizers. More recently he put out the track "Intruder" in 2021, showing no signs of stepping back.
