About
Also known as: Gary Lee Weinrib, WEINRIB GEDDY LEE
Geddy Lee is the voice, bass, and keyboards behind Rush, one of rock's most technically ambitious bands, and his high register vocals and melodic bass work have left a clear mark on generations of musicians. Players like Cliff Burton, Les Claypool, and Tim Commerford have all pointed to Lee as a major influence, which tells you something about the reach of his style. He spent his entire career with Rush alongside guitarist Alex Lifeson, appearing on every single album the band released, and in 1996 the trio became the first rock act to receive the Order of Canada. Rush was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013, after a famously long wait of 14 years of eligibility. Outside Rush, Lee released a solo album called My Favourite Headache in 2000. Rolling Stone ranked him 24th on their list of the 50 greatest bassists of all time in 2020, and Hit Parader placed him 13th among the 100 Greatest Heavy Metal Vocalists. He also contributed the music for 'Red Sector A' on the 1984 Rush album Grace Under Pressure, a song with deeply personal roots that Neil Peart wrote inspired by the wartime experiences of Lee's mother.
